Beat Ingrown Hairs!

I have been asking clients what their main concern is at their waxing appointments – and surprisingly it isn’t the pain! The main concern is #ingrownhairs as you can get them with any type of hair removal.

Ingrown hairs are a total pain, most people get them but don’t know what to do about them. The main thing people want to do with them is pick them…nooo please do not take tweezers to them and have a rummage around. This can really cause damage to your skin and they can scar, so put the tweezers down and listen up!

Lets get the low down on ingrown hairs sorted first – why do they appear?

They can occur when the #hairfollicle becomes blocked with dead skin cells. This tends to make them grow sideways (more common on curly hair and recently shaved hair, apparently). They also tend to struggle to break through skin when it is dry, so keeping skin hydrated is really important after your waxing appointment. Not only does the hair grow underneath, it can also cause red marks and even pustules – little white heads, on the surface of the skin. This is called ‘folliculitis’ and most of the time these will calm down within a few days, with no treatment. But if they continue then you may need to see the GP.

The most common areas on my clients (and myself!) is the inner thigh and the top of the bikini line. These are 2 areas that regularly rub against tight clothing so wearing loose clothes to your waxing appointment is a good place to start.

So what can be done about these pesky hairs?

First of all, the best remedy to try is exfoliating once or twice per week and then moisturising. It is wise to use an oil based body scrub as these will also hydrate the skin. If you don’t see an improvement, or it’s slow going then I have a tried and tested solution.

In 2016 and the early part of 2017 I decided to try all of the high street products for ingrown hairs. This is because I was suffering myself, as were many of my clients. I knew that there was one magic ingredient out there called Salicylic Acid that would help ingrown hairs. This ingredient may sound a bit alarming, but it really isn't. It is the only ingredient that can work its way down a hair follicle and help to lift the hair up. It also helps to reduce the lump and redness of an ingrown hair. So these high street products all said they contained salicylic acid and not one gave me the desired effect - having smooth skin with no ingrown hairs and no red bumps. I also used 2 professional products, both were serums that other salons sell, and I had no luck. I then saw that a brand called Waxperts did a product called Wonder Pads. A fellow salon owner kindly sent me a pot as she recommended them and loved them. These pads contain salycylic acid and you wipe a pad over the area in need and that's it. Really simple. I tried these and O M G the difference. I used one wipe every other day and within 10 days I had no lumps, no redness and a significant reduction in ingrown hairs! I now use them for a few days after waxing, and I dont get any ingrown hairs! I couldnt believe it. I went straight online and opened an account with Waxperts and placed my first order. I have not looked back. Since April 2017 these Wonder Pads have been flying off my shelves. They are quick and easy to use, disposable last for 2-3 months and contain THE magic ingredient; salycylic acid.

I have had good feedback from every single person that has bought them so far – which is pretty amazing for a product that I have been selling for nearly 2 years. Every client always buys them again as well - they last for 2-3 months and are only £10 so are a total steal. If you suffer with ingrown hairs then honestly you NEED these in your life.
